Mission Statement
It is the mission of Greene Funeral Service to facilitate meaningful ways for families to grieve their loss and celebrate the memories of their loved ones.
We will accomplish these tasks by:
- Helping families celebrate and reflect upon the life lived and mourn the loss of someone they loved and cared for
- Provide compassionate and professional service to families experiencing a difficult time such as the death of a loved one
- Serve families of all religious beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures with a caring and sensitive attitude
- Foster a relationship of trust with the families that we serve, our friends and neighbors, our community, our valued staff members, and our vendors
- Educate families and our community so that informed decisions can be made during periods of vulnerability, mental and emotional stress, and strain
- Empower families to consider the value and importance of preplanning and prepurchasing funeral and cremation arrangements
- And serve families as we would want our own family treated with kindness, respect, and dignity.
In exhibiting these attributes our funeral firm will be the market leader in the facilitation and creation of meaningful funeral, memorialization, and cremation experiences.

Our Story
Greene Funeral Service was founded in 1994 by Scott and Tammy Greene. Scott and Tammy are both native to our local area. Scott is a native of Bessemer City, while Tammy is a native of the Chapel Grove area of Gastonia. Scott knew that he wanted to help people as a funeral director ever since he was in the seventh grade and began working for a funeral home in Bessemer City. "I enjoy helping and serving our community", Scott says. "The families are putting the ultimate trust in us with their loved one. It's a very special kind of trust. I believe that everyone should be able to afford a dignified burial or cremation." Scott and Tammy graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Altanta, Georgia, in 1987. Following graduation, Scott managed the E.F. Drum Funeral Home of Lincolnton, NC from December of 1989 to December 1993; until the business was sold. Scott and Tammy opened Greene Funeral Service - West Chapel, Gastonia in July of 1994.
The growth and increase in the business was almost immediate. In their first year of operation, Greene Funeral Service had the opportunity to serve over 145 families. Seeing the need to expand the business to better serve the community, a second location was acquired in 1996. This location became known as Greene Funeral Service - South Chapel, Gastonia. As each year has passed more and more families have chosen our funeral home to serve and care for their family's funeral and cremation needs. As the company has expanded and grown over time, the Greene family felt compelled to open Gaston County's first crematory in 1999. This being done to better serve our families and to ensure their loved one never leaves our care. In late 2002 and into the year of 2003 our South Chapel went through an extensive renovation and expansion process. This has enabled us to better serve our families by providing more spacious and elegant visitation rooms, chapel, state of the art preparation facilities, and expanded parking areas.
Since then and continuing even up to the present time, Greene Funeral Service has been building and expanding upon the reputation of caring service that has been built upon families' trust and confidence placed in us as a respectable funeral firm. Scott and Tammy have two children, Jonathon Greene and Erica Greene-Calaway. Jonathon became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in October 2010. The Greene's have four grandchildren, Ensley Greene, Natalie Greene, Elloitt Calaway, and Aiden Calaway.
Bill Costner, from Bessemer City, is Tammy's brother and serves as the funeral homes' Preneed Services Director and Crematory Manager. Jonathon's wife, Jamie Greene helps Tammy in the accounting office, as well as several other family members that assist in the operation of the company. The Greene family attend Love Valley Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, NC. In addition, Mr. Greene dedicates an extensive amount of time to the community to which we have been blessed to serve. He was the past president of the Bessemer City Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Lions Club, Whetstone Masonic Lodge, of Bessemer City, Scottish Rites Temple, Charlotte, Oasis Shrine Temple, and the York Rites Temple of Gastonia.
Since 1994, our family and staff have served thousands of families. As Gaston County has grown, so have we. Our vision provides value for the families that we are grateful to serve...value in standard of care provided, value in the finest facilities available, and value in total family satisfaction. Our trained, professional, and compassionate staff are here to care for you, our neighbors, and community. While the pain of loss can be difficult, often the greatest comfort can be found in those around you. We are large enough to handle your wishes and small enough to care.
You have a choice of funeral homes. Before need is the time to check differences between funeral home's services and prices. We offer a wide range of services, varying from burials, entombments, cremations, inurnments, memorial services, and out-of-town arrangements. We own and operate our own crematory so that your loved one never leaves our care. Every service has dignity and personalized attention given by our staff no matter what the cost. Sometimes people are hesitant to discuss service and cost before the need arises. However, we want to be open about all aspects of the service in order to meet your family's needs.
Our philosophy in funeral service is to listen carefully to the wishes of each member of the family. We want to provide people with alternative ways to express their loss so that the service is meaningful to them. Our funeral home has deep roots in our community and a long history of personal service to the families that choose Greene Funeral Service.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to our friends, neighbors, and our community for the continued opportunity to serve your family during such a difficult time as the loss of a loved one. You can turn to us for strength, comfort, direction, and compassion in your time of need. That is our firm commitment to you and your family. Our family caring for yours.
