William "Bill" Neff Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 87 at The Robin Johnson Hospice House, Dallas. Born on September 24, 1938, in Poteau, Oklahoma, Bill lived a life full of hard work, joy, and laughter that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy, a testament to his dedication and commitment to serving his country. After his military service, he became a skilled welder in the commercial construction industry, where his work ethic and craftsmanship earned him the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
A simple man at heart, Bill was known for his wonderful sense of humor and was often the life of any gathering. His ability to lighten even the heaviest of hearts with a comical remark or a funny story made him a cherished presence in the lives of his family and friends. He had a passion for reading, particularly enjoying tales filled with adventure, and he found great pleasure in watching classic westerns. Music was another joy in Bill's life, with bluegrass melodies bringing him comfort, and fishing, his favorite pastime, allowed him to revel in the tranquility of nature.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of over 37 years, Cathy Neff of Gastonia; daughters, Elinda of Beaumont, Texas, Alaine of Tennessee, Julie of Vidor, Texas; stepdaughters, Sonja Jobes of Gastonia, Laura Bates of Gastonia, Julie Penley of Asheville; six grandchildren; sister Barbara Maddox; brothers, Tom Neff, Jerry Neff.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Neff Sr. and Virgina Hoyle Neff; brother, Joe Neff.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 2-4 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Greene Funeral Service - West Chapel, located at 216 Archie Whitesides Road, Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Robin Johnson Hospice House c/o Carolina Caring 3975 Robinson Road Newton, NC 28658.
William "Bill" Neff Jr. will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered, for his laughter, his strength, and the kindness he imparted to the world. His memory will continue to resonate through the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
