William George Long

Gastonia, NC - William George "Bill" Long, 92, of Gastonia, NC passed away Sunday, December 22nd, at Caromont Regional Medical Center. Native of Gaston County, he was born November 26, 1921 son of the late, Fred Spurgeon Long Sr., and Bryte Long. William was a veteran chief commisary steward of the US Navy who served 2 terms in the Pacific during WWII . He was also a lifetime member of Olney Presbyterian Church and the King Solomon Masonic Lodge # 704, Gastonia. William was a former owner/operator of The Shrimp Boat, The Freezer Locker and Hamp's Sandwich Shop all of Gastonia. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Belaire staff with special mention to, Thalia Brown for their care of Mr. Long. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC officiated by Pastor Scott Greene. Visitation will be held 12:30 - 2:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery. William is survived by: children; Randy Long and spouse, Janice of Palm Court, Fl, Darrell Long and spouse, Billie Ann, Mike Long, Eric Long, Myra Spencer and spouse, Johnny all of Gastonia; brother, Ray Long of Kings Mountain; sister Helen Long Barker of Stanley; grandchildren; Sharon, Doug, Kelly, Amy, Mandy, Jessica, Khristie, Jeff, Jennifer, 21 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: sisters, Margaret Long, Naida Helton; brothers, Fred S. Long, Jr., Harold, Bobby, Dan, Kenneth Long, and former spouse, Anita Williamson Long. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Masonic Home for Children at OxFord, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565. Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
