William Steve Cloninger, 81, of Gastonia, passed away December 7, 2023, at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.
He was born October 16, 1942, in Gaston County, son of the late Thomas L. Cloninger and Ellene Thomas Cloninger.
He was a member of West Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in Gastonia.
Steve was a founding member of the Two Rivers Shag Club.
He retired from Freightliner after 30 years of service.
He proudly served in both North Carolina and the South Carolina Army National Guard.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, December 15, 2023, at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Road Gastonia, officiated by Pastor Roger Overton.
Steve is survived by his son, Wesley Cloninger; grandchildren, Austin Dale Cloninger and his mother Hope Elliott Cloninger, and Brittany Danielle Cloninger; great-grandchildren, Jada Seagle, Kelcey Seagle and Bella Seagle; brother, Tommy Keith "Tuck" Cloninger; girlfriend, Ruth Ann Steen; former wife, Linda H. Cloninger.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Cloninger Bailey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project PO Box 758516 Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
