William Robert Barnes, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on April 15, 1933, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Robert, as he was affectionately known, was a devoted family man with a heart of gold.
A staple of the Gastonia community, Robert spent his life as a hardworking carpenter, crafting beautiful pieces and building memories with those he loved. He was an industrious man who cherished his work and took immense pride in every project.
Robert was not only a carpenter but a proud U.S. Army veteran. His service to our country was a point of great pride for him, and he carried the values learned during his time in the military throughout his life.
Robert had a zest for life that was infectious. He loved going on road trips, exploring the mountains and the beach, and hiking through state parks. He spent countless hours fishing during his younger days, and he loved bluegrass music. He had a knack for collecting old clocks, each with a story to tell, much like the man himself.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Carol Holcombe (Terry); son, Andy Barnes (Lisa); grandchildren Danny Holcomb (Shelby), Emily Peeler (Zach), Buddy Holcomb, and four great grandchildren. Robert's family was the center of his world, and he embraced every moment spent with them.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 9, 2026 at 12 PM at Olney Church Cemetery located 251 Olney Church Rd., Gastonia, NC 28056
As we gather to remember Robert, we will reflect on his adventurous spirit, his unwavering love for family, and the countless memories we will carry with us in our hearts forever. May his legacy of love and laughter continue to inspire us all. Rest easy, Robert. Your journey continues in our memories and hearts.
