Tonya "Maw Maw" Haas Nix

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tonya "Maw Maw" Haas Nix, who left us peacefully on August 21, 2025, at the age of 54. Born on March 26, 1971, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Tonya made her home in Bessemer City, where she lived a life full of love and laughter.

Tonya was a dedicated machine operator for 29 years at Firestone, where her hard work and commitment made a lasting impact on her colleagues and the community. She loved to travel, visiting the Outer Banks, especially getting to see the loggerhead turtles and cardinals.

Above all, Tonya cherished her family. She is survived by her loving husband, John Nix; her beloved mother, Doris Ann Hawkins; her loving son, Matthew (Shannon); devoted daughter, Kensey (Brian); grandchildren, Maddie, Andee, Cameron, Braedyn, Chase, Zechariah, and Bailey; sister, Hope; and like sisters to Tonya, Melissa, Gina, Tonya, and Angie. Each of them will carry her spirit and memories forward, holding onto the joy and warmth she brought into their lives.

In honor of Tonya's life, a memorial service will be held at Evangel Assembly of God on August 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM, following a visitation at 4:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to come together to celebrate her life and share cherished memories.

Though Tonya has left us, her spirit will remain with all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.

Tonya was preceded in death by her father, Chucky Haas; grandparents, Warren and Pauline Hawkins; grandson, R.J. Ross.
