Tomoko Yumura Smith
January 25, 1936 - June 29, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Tomoko Yumura Smith's passing on June 29, 2025 at the age of 89 with her family by her side at the Robin Johnson House in Dallas, NC.
Tomoko was born and raised in the countryside of Osaka, Japan. She became a war orphan from her natural parents and sibling at the age of two, but navigated obstacles by surviving with perseverance as she grew up during WWII. Tomoko embarked on a beautiful love story with her military husband Ralph who served a full military career beginning with WWII and eventually resettled into civilian life in Gastonia, NC.
Tomoko was a loving wife, mother, grandmother. She was cherished for her unwavering love and support for her family. Her hobbies included flower gardening, cooking meals for her family, shopping, hosting family gatherings, and traveling.
Preceding her in death was her husband Ralph Smith. She is survived by her two children Roy Smith, Sandy Smith and fur baby Chika San of Gastonia. Three grandchildren Heather Starnes, Jay Johnson and Casey Smith of Gastonia.
The family will have a private celebration of life at a later date.
As we remember Tomoko, let us cherish our memories of her kindness, laughter, strength, compassion and love shared so freely. We invite all who knew her to join us in honoring her legacy.
