Ternia Gay Buchanan Gunter

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ternia Gay Buchanan Gunter, a beloved mother, devoted friend, and spirited soul, who left us peacefully on May 7, 2026, at the age of 72. Ternia was born on September 27, 1953, in Gastonia, NC, where she spent her life weaving memories into the fabric of the community she cherished.

Ternia was known as a foster winder in the textile industry, who dedicated her hands and heart to her work. However, her greatest joy came from the simple pleasures of life spending time in the mountains, exploring yard sales for hidden treasures, and sharing laughter with her family. She had a particular soft spot for her dog, Buster, whose loyalty matched her own and whose spirit brightened her days.

Ternia is survived by her two sons, Marvin Mathis (Maria) and Shawn Mathis (Lisanne), who carry her love and lessons in their hearts. She is also survived by her nephews Travis Robbins, Sonny Worley, Jamie Deputy and Jason Deputy; grandchildren Megan, Zacharie, and Ashton Mathis; and 8 great-grandchildren. Together, they will remember her for her unwavering spirit, her fierce dedication to family, and her zest for life's little adventures.

A reflective gathering to celebrate Ternia's life will be Sunday, May 17th,2026, from 4-6pm at Greene Funeral Service South Chape, inviting all who loved her to share stories, laughter, and tears.

As we bid farewell to Ternia, let us remember her kind smile, her playful spirit, and the way she brought joy to those around her. May her soul find peace, and may her legacy live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Ternia was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis & Pauline Buchanan.
