Talmadge Sidney Splawn, 82, of Bessemer City, passed away on February 4, 2016, at Peak Resources, Cherryville.
He was born July 27, 1933, in Gaston County, son of the late Horace Splawn and Onie Poteat Splawn.
Mr. Splawn was a US Navy veteran, who served proudly during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 263 of Bessemer City. He served as a volunteer for Bessemer City Fire Department Station #62 for over 10 years. He was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and a charter member of the Gaston RC Flyers Club. He was a member of the Bessemer City Wood Carving Club known as the "Whetstone Whittlers".
A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Rd. Gastonia, officiated by the Reverends Dick Whitener and Dick Hannah Jr.
The family will receive friends 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2016, at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Splawn is survived by his loving wife, of 58 years, Betty Taylor Splawn; children, David Splawn and wife, Lorie, Donna Splawn Wenzel and husband, Doug, Lisa Splawn Grigg and husband, David, Mark Splawn and fiancée, Pam Bryant; brothers, Harry and Dan Splawn; sister, Becky Mauney; seven grandchildren; thirteen great – grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde, Glenn, Boyd and Bruce Splawn; sisters, Pat Phillips and Peggy Jenkins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bessemer City Fire Department 119 W. Washington Avenue Bessemer City, NC 28016.
Arrangements are with the West Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
