Susan Elise Matthews

Susan Elise Matthews, 79, of Clinton, Maryland and Kings Mountain, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

She was preceded in death by her parents William Edward Bayless Sr. and Louise Browne Bayless; husband, Jack Matthews; and nephew, William Edward Bayless III.

Susan is survived by her two brothers, John Bayless (Mary), of Kings Mountain, Bill Bayless (Linda) of Hamlet, NC; five nieces, Tina Bayless, Pam Bayless (Charlie M), Susan Riddle (Cecil), Wendy Herbster (Chris), Jennie Bayless (Charlie S); one nephew, Dale Bayless (Elaine); stepdaughter, Laura Sussan of Connecticut; three step-grandchildren; ten great-nieces and nephews; six great-great-nieces and nephews.

Susan cherished her time at the lake, enjoying boating and hosting family gatherings at her lake house. Her eccentric style and love of travel, cruises, and exploring new places, including the Amish country to get soft pretzels from Eli's with the butter running down her chin will be fondly remembered.

Susan's passing leaves a great void; however, her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all her loved ones.

A celebration of Susan's life will be held 8:30 pm Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Road Gastonia, officiated by Pastor Randy Richardson.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 pm at the funeral home.
