With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Stella Elizabeth Phillips, who left us on February 8, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on November 17, 1936, in Lowell, NC, Stella lived a life filled with laughter, love, and warmth. She spent her last years in Gastonia, where she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, friend, and neighbor.
Stella dedicated many years as the first female dispatcher for the City of Gastonia Fire Department, where her quick thinking and kind heart made a difference for many. Those who knew Stella remember her not just for her work, but also for her joy in life; whether she was front porch sitting, swinging in her yard swing, or enjoying the sunny days at the beach and the mountains.
Stella had a special love for yard sales, always on the hunt for hidden treasures. She cherished her beloved dog, "Rusty," who brought her endless joy and companionship. Her family also fondly recalls her famous mashed potatoes and Thanksgiving dinners, often accompanied by her cheerful whistling as she worked her culinary magic in the kitchen. Upon the wish of Stella, the pacemaker, that beat for her, was donated to the animal society, so that it could continue to be used for someone's loving pet.
Stella is survived by her son, JR Phillips (Reci); daughters, Daphene Lewallen (Randy), Sharon Bell (Richard), Sondra Short (Otis), Sandra Bell (Deris), and Monica Smith (James); 15 grandchildren including their spouses; 27 great grandchildren including their spouses, 7 great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Plemmons; resident cousin, Peggy Head, all who carried her spirit of love and joy into their own lives.
Stella was preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Baxter Gene Phillips Sr.; parent, Grover Odell and Clara Ray; brothers, James Ray and Cecil Ray; 2 beloved grandsons; longtime friend, Inez Rhyne.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Stella's life. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Greene Funeral Service South Chapel, 1503 S York Rd., Gastonia, NC, 28052, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. She will be reunited with her husband at Evergreen Cemetery.
In honoring Stella, let us remember her laughter, her loving nature, and the simple moments that truly made her who she was. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
