It is with a mix of sorrow and celebration that we announce the passing of Ronnie Charles Pope, 73, affectionately known as "Porky" or "Dancing Bear." Born on June 15, 1952, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Ronnie went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family. Ronnie was a beloved husband, daddy, pawpaw, great pawpaw, and friend.
Ronnie lived life full of energy and his passions were as varied as the classic cars he loved to restore. A talented mechanic, he could take apart and put together any engine within hours, a testament to his years of dedication in the automotive world. After retiring honorably from the U.S. Army and NCNG, he continued his mechanical journey. He worked tirelessly for Gaston County Schools maintaining buses, spent time with the Department of Transportation in Dallas, and capped off his career with the city of Gastonia.
A true car enthusiast, Ronnie also had an incredible collection of motorcycles-eight in total! He loved to socialize with his coworkers, sharing meals and laughter. His joy extended beyond mechanics, as he adored dancing, particularly square dancing and shagging with his sister, Linda and friends, filling all of their lives with fun and laughter.
In addition to his work and hobbies, Ronnie was a proud member of Westview Baptist Church, where he built lasting friendships and cherished memories. His love for fishing and trips to the mountains, along with many joyful pier fishing excursions with the men from church, brought him great happiness. Those serene days spent at the Swiss Mountain Village Time Share at Blowing Rock were among his treasured adventures.
Ronnie is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Trudy Pope; children, Amy Gardner (Lee Hayes), Anthony Pope (Lauren), Greg Gardner (Christine), and Missy Parker; grandchildren, Josh Hill, Jamie Gardner, Sara Gardner (Church), Easten Pope, Deakin Pope, Braylon Pope, and Ashtyn Pope; great grandchildren, Zeb Lee Banner and Elias Pope; aunt, Lyn Wooten; fur baby, Buddy; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and cousins.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Marie Pope; sister, Linda Scott.
Family and friends are invited to join us as we celebrate Ronnie's life. Visitation will be held at Westview Baptist Church on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a heartfelt funeral service, officiated by Pastor Scott Rudisill, at 2:00 PM.
