Robert Leon Owenby

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert Leon Owenby, 77, of Gastonia. After a distinguished career in the US Army spanning 20 years, he passed away on June 21, 2025, at Belaire Health Care Center.

Robert was born on February 2, 1948, in Ducktown, TN, to Earl and Winona Owenby, who preceded him in death. He served two tours in Vietnam and held the role of military police during his tenure in the US Army. His commendable service earned him numerous honors, including the Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Owenby Allen. He is survived by his brother, Bob Owenby (Marilyn); nieces, Jada Owenby, Sarah Smith (David); nephews, Scott Owenby (Mendy), Chris Owenby (Heather); seven great-nieces; three great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; a great-great-nephew; and dear friend Ricky Drum.

A graveside service will be held at the VA Cemetery in Salisbury at a later date.
