Robert Boyce Oakley, 89, of Gastonia passed away at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 18, 2023
He was born October 2, 1933, in Gaston County to the late Herbert & Etta Oakley. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brothers James, Gordon, and Harry; sister Mary Emily Threlkeld.
Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Juanita Oakley; daughters, Melissa Jackson (David), Nancy Bryant (Todd), Amy Raby (Chip); grandchildren Caroline Jackson, Matthew Jackson (Danica), Abigail Bryant, Anna Bryant, Landon Raby, Nolan Raby, Cale Raby; and four great grandchildren.
Robert was a charter member of Linwood Presbyterian Church. He was a faithful attendee, teacher, and supporter of the church. He held several positions in the church. As a third-generation brick mason, Robert owned and operated Oakley Construction. Robert also owned and operated Oakley's Nursery, a family-run business in which he fulfilled his love for growing plants. He loved to work more than anyone, a love which continued well into his retirement through raising catfish, farming, and selling his produce at the local farmer's market. Lastly, Robert had a love for baseball and music. He loved to sing, yodel, and play the guitar, piano and harmonica. He was a lifetime choir member and loved singing duets with his beloved wife, Nita.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service located at 1503 S. York Road, Gastonia. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 am. A graveside service and interment will be conducted at Pisgah ARP Church Cemetery.
