Robert Thomas Kelso

Jul 3, 1946 — Jun 18, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Thomas Kelso, affectionately known as Tom, who left us on June 18, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on July 3, 1946, in Gaston County, North Carolina, Tom spent his life in Gastonia, where he became a beloved figure in his community.

Tom was a proud veteran, having served in both the Marine Corps and the Army, being the first in a long line of Marines in his family. His dedication and service shaped the man he became, instilling in him values of service and patriotism. After over 50 years as a professional land surveyor and business owner, he was known for his hard work and expertise in the field.

A loving father, Tom is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Freeman (Brian), and son, Amos Kelso; mother of his children, Angie McAbee. He cherished his grandkids, Dakota Kennard (Tyler), Brandon Joel Freeman (Stephanie Kolanowski), and Angelica Dulen; great-grandson, Carter James Freeman.

Tom was preceded in death by his spouse, Maggie Kelso; parents, Fred and Pat Kelso; brother Fred Kelso Jr.

Tom had a special bond with his beloved great-grandfather, Papa Wallace, who played a significant role in his upbringing. He found joy in life's simple pleasures, whether it was going shag dancing or admiring his favorite classic car, a 1932 Ford Roadster. Tom loved being outdoors, wandering through the woods, and cherished the company of his beloved dog, Roscoe.

A funeral service will be held to honor his life and legacy on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Greene Funeral Service South Chapel, officiated by Rev. Chris Stadler. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM where family and friends can come together to celebrate Tom's life.

Tom's love for the LORD, strong work ethic, and tenacious spirit will forever remain with us, as we gather to remember a truly remarkable man.
