Ray Swanson

Ray Swanson, 68, of Gastonia, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012 at his home. He was born March 16, 1944 in Gaston County, son of the late, William Shafter and Estella Earley Swanson. Ray was a loving husband, wonderful father and loved by his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "PaPa". He attended South Gastonia Church of God. Mr. Swanson was an avid fisherman, gardner and a master wood worker. A funeral service will be held 2pm on Thursday at South Gastonia Church of God, officiated by Rev. Bobby Gilley and Rev. Sam Barnette. The family will receive friends 6-9 pm on Wednesday at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia. Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. He is survived by: his loving wife of 47 years, Edith "Cookie" Swanson of the home; son and daughter in-law, Brian and Dawn Swanson; granddaughters, Lauren and Lindsey Swanson; sister, Shirley Hughes and husband Bud.; numerous nieces and nephews; some special children who loved "PaPa" Ray, Baylee Halk, Julia Skolnik, Sarah Putnam, Madison McGee. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: brothers, Harley Swanson, Frank Easterly; sisters, Marie Prince, Ruby Kimsey, Louise Towel, Wilma Swanson.
