Michael Edward Taylor, 18, beloved son, brother and friend, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Born on September 20, 1999, the first son of Mike and Laura Taylor, Michael was a proud member of the 2018 graduating class of Piedmont Community Charter School.
Michael is survived by his parents Mike and Laura Taylor and brother Matthew of the home, maternal grandparents Dennis and Sally Cloninger and paternal grandparents Cliff and Edith Taylor and Dale Moody and great grandmother Joyce Menard; aunts Lisa Cloninger (Kathi) and Donna Mauney (Jeff)Norma Barber (Joey),. Michael was preceded in death by his brother Adam, grandfather Wayne Moody and great grandmother Alma Cloninger. Also left behind to grieve are many cousins and friends too numerous to name, along with Michael's constant companion, his dog Punkin.
He was a member of Unity Baptist Church. He played basketball and baseball for his school, enjoyed his bowling league at Liberty Lanes and loved going to races with his daddy. He was a life-long fan of UNC Chapel Hill Tar Heel basketball. In all he did, Michael brought his heart of gold and wide engaging smile. He loved his friends and wanted to be friends with everyone. He succeeded well because from the moment of his diagnosis of the illness that took his life, he was never alone. Michael was born prematurely and spent the first month of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. From the tiny preemie he was at birth, Michael grew to be more than 6' 3" tall and wore size 16 shoes. It is no wonder they called him the "gentle giant"!
"Some people come into our lives and touch our hearts so deeply that we will never be the same again." Words cannot express the appreciation of his family for the support and love offered to them and to Michael throughout his illness. Special thanks to the Unity Baptist Church family and Piedmont Community Charter School.
A service of celebration for Michael's life, officiated by Pastor Roger Mathis will be held on Saturday, September 8, at 4 PM at First Assembly of God, 777 South Myrtle School Road, Gastonia, North Carolina 28052. Visitation will be prior to the service at the church from 2 – 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made through Unity Baptist Church, 482 North Myrtle School Road, Gastonia, North Carolina 28052. Arrangements are through Greene Funeral Service - South Chapel in Gastonia.
