Mary Charles Boyd Haynes, 94, of Gastonia, NC went home to be with the Lord this Wednesday, March 21st, 2018.
Mary was born in Gastonia November 16, 1923, the only child of Charles Glenn Boyd and Pearl Bumgardner Boyd.
Mary graduated from Gastonia High School where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Vernon O. Haynes. They were a happy, loving couple of 49 years until his death on Jan. 4, 1992. She was a doting mother and homemaker to four children. She was also a profoundly gifted, highly prolific artist who loved decorative painting and was a member of the Tar Heel Tolers. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, and her beloved pets. She was also, as anyone who sampled her cuisine would attest, a first-rate cook, another activity she adored.
Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, cherished and respected by all who knew her. She had a warm, genuine demeanor, always comforting, ever supportive, and a wonderful sense of humor. She retained all of her wit to her very last days in this world.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon, and her son-in-law Bill Robertson. She is survived by her son, Kim; daughters Charmian, Robin and Jill; and grandson, Sean Robertson. We grieve and will miss her deeply but also rejoice, for we know, as Ignatius of Antioch wrote,
"It is better for me to die in behalf of Jesus Christ, than to reign over all the ends of the earth."
Visitation is at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 26th at Greene Funeral Service South Chapel, 1503 S. York Rd., followed immediately by a graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S. New Hope Rd.
Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
