Mary Seay Barrett

Mary Victoria Barrett, a beloved figure in her Gastonia community, peacefully passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on December 23, 1926, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Mary lived her life surrounded by family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of love and care.

Mary attended Salvation Army Church, Gastonia. She was an excellent piano player and played for several churches. She worked at Garrison General Hospital, and retired from Mecklenburg County Mental Health. She also volunteered at several Salvation Army locations with community care. Her compassionate spirit and gentle heart touched the lives of many, and she was cherished by colleagues and patients alike.

Mary is survived by her children, Anita Lowery, Aaron Barrett, Justina Barrett, and Wendy Elrod; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Munsey; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 5:30pm, Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Salvation Army - 1506 Union Rd, Gastonia, NC 28054.

She will be missed dearly, but her legacy of compassion and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert Seay and Rosa Seay; brothers, Herb Seay, Don Seay, and Bud Seay; daughters, Jerry Barrett, and Nancy Wheeler; and granddaughter, Terri Lowery.
