Martha "Joann" Simpson

Martha "Joann" Simpson, 76, of Gastonia, passed away November 12, 2023, at The Greens of Gastonia.

'Joann' was preceded in death by her best friend and companions Judy and Freddie Odom, and her spoiled sweet pupper Tinkerbell, whom she loved immeasurably.

She is survived by her son Dean Simpson, and her grandsons-by-choice Christopher and Brian McCrary, and her niece-by-choice Star Ann Lowery.

Joann spent the final months of her life being cared for at The Green's and by the staff there. Her niece Star visited her often and brought her some of her favorite things to comfort her while she was there. She loved to color and had a vast collection of coloring books and supplies. She was a mighty fighter, having recovered from several illnesses that most didn't expect her to survive. She found joy in the visits from her grandson and niece as that was the highlight of her days. She left many memories behind in those who were a part of her life in her younger years, and that memory lives on in their hearts.

In her memory, we all hope and ask that you take the time out of your busy schedules and visit loved ones who might be confined to nursing home life. Visit strangers there, you never know how much your visit will lift the spirits of those who may be too far away from family to see them. None of us ever envision our final moments spent alone in a nursing home, but there are so many who do just that. Our elder generation need love and comfort just like everyone else and you could make a difference in their life.
