Martha "Mama Jo" Carswell Penner

Martha "Mama Jo" Carswell Penner, 89, of Gastonia, passed away April 26,2023, at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Samuel Everette Morrison and Eula Amanda Spencer Morrison.

Mama Jo was a member of Charity Independent Baptist Church, Gastonia.

She loved to go fishing and was a former member of the Fairfield Boating Club.

She enjoyed singing Karaoke. She enjoyed being around children of all ages and spoiling them as much as she could.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Charity Independent Baptist Church, 2425 Hillmont Street Gastonia, officiated by Pastor Ronnie Pressley.

The family will receive friends 1-2 pm prior to the service at the church.

The interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.

Mama Jo is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Winford Buddy Penner; son, Calvin David Carswell; daughters, Jane Sutton and husband Jimmy, Martha Ann Ball; stepdaughters, Carlotta Anderson and husband Richard, Bridgett Penner; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mama Jo was preceded in death by her first husband, Everette Goldman Carswell; son, Everette Lee Carswell; stepson, Alan Penner.

The West Chapel of Greene Funeral Service located at 216 Archie Whitesides Road Gastonia will be serving the Penner family.
