Libby "Sweet Pea" Cody

January 31, 1956 — November 28, 2016

Libby "Sweet Pea" Elonia Waters Cody, 60, of Gastonia, passed away November 28, 2016 at Golden Living Center – Dartmouth. She was born January 31, 1956 in Gaston County, the daughter of the late Calvin W. Waters and Geraldine "Jerrie" Miller Waters. Libby was a very special person to all who knew her. She was a member of Ridge Baptist Church. A brain tumor left Libby legally blind and partially paralyzed at the young age of 12, but this impediment did nothing to hold back her strong spirit and desire to help others. She attended the Governor Morehead School for The Blind in Raleigh and received her GED from Gaston College. She was also an avid CB Radio Operator, thus the nickname "Sweet Pea." She loved to read, using her talking book machine. She was a member of the Martha Goebel EAC club, who took part in many community outreach programs for the disabled and those in need. She had many personal accomplishments, one of her proudest was receiving special recognition for knitting 26 quilts to donate to Red Cross disaster victims. Denied in life such simple capabilities most of us take for granted, her philanthropic heart was never bitter for the things she did not have, on the contrary, she considered herself very blessed indeed. In an interview she once stated, "A lot of people don't know they can do things until they come and learn that other people with the same problems are active and enjoying productive lives. They learn that the good Lord doesn't put more on you than you can handle." During this difficult time of loss, we can only hope to remember her wise words. Libby is survived by her daughter Sarah Elizabeth Cody Davis and her husband Aaron; her brother Rodney Waters and his wife Tammy; her sister Gail W. Postell and her husband Barry; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Johnny Robert Cody and her sister Ethel Dine "Scootsie" Waters. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 pm Thursday at Greene Funeral Service – South Chapel – 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia. A graveside service, officiated by the Rev. Chester Waters will be held 2 pm Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont. Memorials may be made to Ridge Baptist Church, 3818 Old York Rd., Gastonia, NC 28056 or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. Arrangements are with South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
