With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Laura Faye McDonald on January 10, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on March 24, 1940, in North Carolina, Laura lived a vibrant life full of love, music, and devotion to her community.
Laura was a cherished wife to her husband, Harvey McDonald. In addition to her husband, she is also survived by her daughters, Sherri Welling and Terri McDonald; her grandchildren, Allison Smithers and Dylan Gray; her great-grandchildren, Jameson Smithers and Noah Smithers; her brother, Troy Hatley Jr.; and her nephew, Kevin Hatley.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Colene Hatley.
She was a dedicated teacher, having served the students of South Gastonia Elementary and later H. H. Beam Elementary, where she inspired countless young minds with her passion for education. Laura held a Master's Degree and poured her heart into her work, leaving a lasting impact on her students and colleagues.
A long-time member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Laura was also the former choir director, sharing her love for music with the congregation. Her joy for life extended beyond the classroom and the church; she loved playing the piano, shopping-especially at Chico's and had a particular fondness for shoes that brought her immense joy.
Family and friends are invited to join us for a visitation at Greene Funeral Service South Chapel on January 15, 2026, at 6:00 PM.
Laura's spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, and she will be dearly missed. Let's celebrate her life together, honoring the beautiful memories we all shared.
