John Malcolm Jones, 77, of Gastonia, NC, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Caromont Regional Medical Center, Gastonia.
He was born September 21, 1946, a native of Gaston Co, NC, son of the late Lonnie E. Jones and Thelma J. Hope.
John was a member of Independent Baptist Tabernacle for 31 years, where he was the choir director, taught Sunday school, was a member of the deacon and school board, and trustee of the church. He served in the US Navy as an officer and mechanical engineer. He worked for Pneumafil Corp., Robertson Air Tech, and The Alridge Corp. before retiring. He loved fishing, making bait tanks, building bird houses, and classic cars. Most of all, he loved the Lord and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, William Creed Hope; and sisters, Rosa Jones Trantham, Marlene Jones Heafner.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia B. Jones; daughter, Michelle J. Powell (Nelson); granddaughters, Mallory Shepard (Logan), and Aubree Powell; and great-granddaughter, Stormie Shepard.
Family will receive friends 5:00pm - 7:00pm, Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Independent Baptist Tabernacle - 2128 Dallas Cherryville Hwy, Dallas, NC 28034.
A funeral service officiated by Pastors Brian and Michael Spargo, and Associate Pastor Drew Lynch, will be held at 11:00am, Monday, at the church.
Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery, with military honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard and the US Navy.
