John Steven Harrelson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Steven "Steve" Harrelson, age 68, who passed away peacefully at his home in Gastonia, North Carolina, on September 8th, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born September 29, 1957, in Gastonia, North Carolina, the son of the late Marshall Eugene Harrelson and Ora Janette Harrelson.

Throughout his life, Steve was known for his love of sports, sense of humor, generosity, strength, and, above all, his deep love for his family. He had a way of making people laugh, lending a hand when it was needed, and showing his love through the life he built and the people he cared for.

Family was everything to Steve. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, cherished brother and son, and a loyal friend. Some of his greatest joys came from simply being surrounded by the people he loved. His five grandchildren held an especially treasured place in his heart and were truly the lights of his life.

For more than 35 years, Steve served as Director of Field Operations for Tar Heel Drilling and Blasting. He took great pride in his work, and one of the most meaningful parts of his career was having the opportunity to work side by side with his brother-in-law, Tim Franks. Their many years working together created memories and a bond that Steve cherished deeply.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Eugene and Ora Janette Harrelson; four brothers, Jimmy, Billy, Don, and Ronnie Harrelson; and one sister, Patricia Harrelson.

Left to cherish his memory is Cindy, his loving wife of 43 years; his children, John Steven Harrelson Jr. (Jan) of New York, New York; Casey (Matt) Blackburn of Mooresboro, North Carolina; and Brittany (JT) Stillwell of Clover, South Carolina.

He also leaves behind his five beloved grandchildren, Alexandra, Henry, Carter, Collins, and William, who brought immeasurable happiness and pride to his life.

Steve is also survived by his brother, Roger Harrelson of Gastonia; his sister, Beth Rexrode (Charles) of Bessemer City; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.

Though our hearts are broken by this tremendous loss, we are profoundly grateful for the years we were given with Steve-for the laughter, memories, lessons, strength, and love he gave so freely. His presence made the lives of those around him better, and the impact of the life he lived will remain with his family for generations to come.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at Gaston Memorial Park prior to the graveside service. Visitation will start on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM, followed by the graveside service at 12:00 PM.
