Gastonia, NC - Jay Carpenter, 74, of Gastonia, passed away September 17, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 8, 1940 in Mitchell County, son of the late James and Justina Carpenter. Jay was a loving, devoted husband, father and proud Paw-Paw to his granddaughter. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Gastonia. Jay was mentioned in the Gazette as making a hole-in-one - hole No. 12 at Blue Ridge Country Club in Linville Falls. Some of his hobbies include anything to do with computers and sports. Left to cherish Jay's memories are: loving wife of 55 years, Maxine Carpenter of the home; daughter, Sherry Cox and husband, Matthew of Stanley; step-mother, Elizabeth Carpenter; mother-in-law, Lorene Burleson; brothers, Larry and Frank Carpenter; sisters, Jenny Briggs, Linda Harrill, Betty Land and Mamie Carpenter; granddaughter, Courtney Huggins and husband, Josh. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: grandson, Joshua Matthew Cox; brother, Jesse Carpenter and sister, Shelba Jean Buchanan. A going home service will be held 1:00 pm on Saturday at Greene Funeral Service - South Chapel - 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, officiated by the Revs. Todd Terry and Richard Brown. The family will receive friends 11:00 - 12:45 pm Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly.
