Janice Varnell Guffie, 81, of McAdenville, passed away August 29, 2018 at Stanley Total Living Center. She was born August 26, 1937, in Cramerton, NC to the late Rev. W. O. Williams and Mrs. Mary Lee Williams. Growing up with her only sister Mary Ann. Janice was a member of North Belmont Church of God where she was very active in teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. On July 1, 1955 she married the love of her life Harold "Dean" Guffie. In 1958, they started their family with the birth of their son Steven. In 1961, Andrea, their first daughter entered the world. During her time as a mother of two, Janice stayed home to raise her family and worked behind the scene helping launch her husband small business. In 1966, their second daughter Martha was born. Five years later they welcomed their baby girl Regina. Janice took pride in her role of being a Wife, homemaker, and Mother. She spent many years working in the local mills until, she went on to fulfill her dream of opening up a ceramic shop, McAdenville Ceramics and Gifts. Throughout her time as a successful business owner, and ceramic artist, many of her pieces were selected to be sold exclusively at Macy's in NYC. In 1986 they were overcome with joy in the birth of their first granddaughter Medea, daughter of Andrea. 1989 was a roller coaster of emotions when she lost her daughter Andrea to cancer. In the midst of loosing her own child, Janice also gained a daughter as they adopted Medea as their own. Do to the unfortunate circumstances with her daughter Andrea, Janice stopped working to stay at home with Medea. God knew the struggles in their hearts with such a tragedy, and three months later, Alex their first grandson was born, to daughter Regina. The family continued to grow with the birth of many more grandchildren over the years. They all grew up close together and cherished many summers at the family vacation home in Holden Beach. In addition to her parents, Janice is proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Harold "Dean" Guffie; and Daughter Andrea Lynn Guffie. Left to cherish her memories are sister Mary Ann Keeney and her daughter, Lisa Polk and family of Cramerton; son Steven Guffie of McAdenville; daughters Martha Collins and husband Steve of Gastonia, Regina Leeper and husband Jack of McAdenville, Medea Shamblin and husband Danny of McAdenville; Grandchildren Alex Guffie and Amy Caserta, Christian Collins and wife Abby, Alaina Collins, Havan Guffie and Harleigh Hayes, Haley and Kearsten Shamblin, Jaylen Leeper-Williams, O'Shay Leeper and Isabella Shamblin; numerous brother and sister in-laws and nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2 PM Saturday, at North Belmont Church of God, 2316 Acme Road, officiated by pastors Carl Overton and Vernon Adams. The family will receive friends at 1 PM, prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to North Belmont Church of God Children's Department. Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
