Fort Mill, SC - Jane Audrey Steinmetz passed away on June 16, 2024, at age 85. She was born in Chicago, IL to the late Matthew and Charlotte Hilton. She grew up in Chicago and attended the local schools.
Jane attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Psychology. Jane worked as a school psychologist for many years. She truly enjoyed working with students.
Jane married Jon Steinmetz, whom she met at Bradley, on December 24, 1964. They lived in Park Forest, IL for 42 years, and raised two children, Jonna Lynn and Jay Daniel. Jane and Jon retired to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 2006.
Psychologist, sociologist, musicologist, Cubs fan, educator, collector and cat lover are a few of the ways we remember Jane. She was very active in her local communities. Jane enjoyed more than 60 years working with choirs as both a performer and director and enjoyed playing the piano. She loved to travel and attended more than 37 newspaper conferences starting in 1974 (despite not being in the newspaper business). But, she was the editor of her beloved Faith United Church's newsletter while she was a member.
After retirement, Jane's passion project was displaying her collection of 46 years of Time magazine covers, 1963-2009, on the walls of her garage. Jane and her covers were a front page story in the Hendersonville Time-News March 23, 2017.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jon, and survived by her daughter Jonna of Chicago, and son Dan (Marina, their son Ashton, and her brother Wes) of Fort Mill, SC; brother David and Carolyn Hilton of Mission Viejo, California; and many dear friends from their Park Forest and Hendersonville days.
A celebration of Jane's life will be held at a later date.
Memorials can be made to the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE).
