James Edward Whitener

James Edward Whitener, 83, of Gastonia, NC, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Belaire Healthcare Center.

He was born October 22, 1940, in Clover, SC, to the late Robert and Elizabeth Whitener.

James was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He was also a member of the Ham Radio Amateur Club. He was a master tool and die technician and a master in woodworking, musical instruments, and fiddles. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and served in Vietnam where he was Top Marksman, rifle range and a platoon leader.

James is survived by his wife Portia Johnson Whitener; son, Mark Edward Whitener and wife Gina; brothers, Robert Garner Whitener, D. Ken Whitener; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service officiated by Dr. Jonathan Watts, will be held Monday, January 15, 2024, 12:00 PM, at Clover Wesleyan Church, 102 Parkview Lane, Clover, SC 29710.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the church.
