James "Jim" Moten, 82, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2025. He was born in Gaston County on April 2, 1942, to the late Ralph and Clara Moten. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Billie Williams Moten and brother Ray Moten.
Jim is survived by his sons, Jamey and Jeff; daughter-in-law, Maureen; and grandchildren, Emma Moten, Laurel Carr, Samuel Carr and Lorelei Carr.
Jim attended Gardner-Webb University where he played baseball and earned his degree. After college he was a member of the AAA baseball team Norfolk Tides. Upon his return to Gastonia, Jim married his first wife, Gaye Greene. Together they raised two sons, Jamey and Jeff. The family lived in Gastonia and Boone, NC. Jim worked throughout North Carolina as a manager for the Employment Security Commission. Later in his life he married Billie Williams and became a stepfather to Travis Carr and Jamie Knight.
Jim enjoyed tennis, baseball, gardening, watching Western TV and movies, travel and Carolina basketball! He was also a member of the YMCA and enjoyed exercising and eating out with his group of friends known as the "Y's Guys."
A celebration of life officiated by Steve Clark will be held at 2pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service located at 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC. The family will receive friends from 1-2pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
