James Franklin Lavender

James "Jim" Franklin Lavender, 86, of Gastonia, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Peak Resources of Cherryville. Jim was the son of the late David Randolph Lavender and the late Pauline Elizabeth Cole Lavender.

Jim was born on May 21, 1940, in Mount Holly, North Carolina. He enjoyed a long career as a chemist with Clariant Corporation in Mount Holly, where he worked until his retirement.

Music and faith were at the heart of Jim's life. He served as Minister of Music at several churches throughout Gaston County, using his musical gifts to strengthen the faith of others. For Jim, music was more than a vocation or pastime. It was an expression of his faith and a means of serving, leading, and encouraging those around him.

On Christmas Eve in 1961, Jim married Ruth Ann Clemmer Lavender, the love of his life. Jim loved Ann deeply, and their nearly 64 years of marriage were marked by devotion, companionship, and steadfast love. Ann passed away on October 27, 2025.

Jim was an avid sports fan who also enjoyed tinkering with cars and working with his hands. Whether repairing something, solving a problem, or finding a way to help someone else, he was always happiest when he could make things better. His generosity knew no bounds. Beneath his capable hands was a tender heart, and he sincerely wanted the best for everyone he knew.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Nancy Ann Lavender Smith (John); his sons, Gregory Scott Lavender (Wanda) and Christopher Allen Lavender (Noel); his grandchildren, Shad Aaron Lavender (Danielle), Tyler Ryan Smith (Hannah), and Brian Michael Smith (Christen); and five great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

In addition to his beloved wife, Ann, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, David Lavender, and his sister, Carol Lavender Truelove.

Jim's family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Peak Resources of Cherryville for the extraordinary care, kindness, and compassion they showed both Jim and Ann throughout their final years. Their devoted care brought great comfort to the Lavender family and will always be deeply appreciated.

The family will gather privately at a later date for a memorial service honoring the lives of Jim and Ann.

Jim's life was a beautiful expression of steadfast faith, generous service, and enduring love. Through his music, his leadership, his kindness, and the countless ways he helped others, he made life better for those around him. The song of his life will continue in the hearts of his family and all who were blessed to know and love him.
