James M. "Jim" Avey, 83, went to be with his Lord on February 28, 2014, at his home in Gastonia. He was born August 25, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Avey taught school for over 35 years in Gaston County where hundreds of his students and colleagues and countless others came to know him and love him dearly. He co-founded and briefly supply-pastored Carson Memorial Baptist Church, Crowder's Mt., NC. He was a founding member and longtime music director of Trinity Baptist Church, Gaffney, SC, where he had served faithfully in many capacities since 1981. A funeral service will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Rd., Gastonia, officiated by the Rev. Chris Wilson and Dr. Ray St. John. Friends will be received 10:00 - 11:45 on Saturday at the funeral home with interment following the funeral at Westview Gardens, Bessemer City. Mr. Avey is survived by a nephew, Bill Avey, and his wife, Crystal; great-nieces Caitlin and Suzy Avey; and a sister in-law, Sue Avey, all of Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Jennie (Marshall) Avey, and brother, Wally Avey.
