James Ernest Cope

Gastonia James Ernest Cope, age 84, passed away September 25, 2012, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born October 27, 1927 in Jackson County, son of the late Conley Herman Cope and Bessie Queen Cope. Mr. Cope was "Paw Paw" to everyone, loved to tend his garden and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a life long member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Sylva, NC. James was an MP in the US Army during WWII. He was retired from Burlington Industries and Galey & Lord after 45 years of service. A funeral service will be held 11 am on Friday at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, officiated by Rev. Eddie Spencer. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. The interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. He is survived by: his son, James Tommy Cope and his wife, Terry of Gastonia; daughter, Patsy C. Smith and her husband, Dennis of Gastonia; sister, Inis Payne of Black Mountain; grandchildren, James Heath Cope and wife, Rebecca, Heidi M. Adams and husband, Clifton, Jetty C. Mulwee and husband, Bobby, Denice Cope, Stacy Smith, Dawn Smith; great grandchildren, Kobe, Carmelo, Ayden, Jena, Blake, Addie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: his loving wife of 38 years, Jetty Cope; brother, Tom Deitz; sisters, Mattie Cogdill, Lucille Payne. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215-3220 Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
