Gastonia: James Auther Hilton, 73, went to be with the Lord on Oct 8, 2016 at the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas, NC with colon cancer. James was born in Cowpens, SC on April 30, 1943 to the late Helen Warlick Hilton and James Ervin Hilton. He was raised in Mount Holly, NC and resided there until moving to Gastonia. He was also proceeded in death by his Father-in-law, Walter Barnette. He was married and survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis Barnette Hilton and by Libby Barnette Worley, his confidant, caregiver and Sister-in-law that he considered a daughter. James was a US Army Veteran where he served in Vietnam. He never missed an opportunity to thank another veteran every chance he could. After returning from the Army he began his career at Burlington Industries and then eventually retired from Gaston County Dye and Machine several years later. He was seen around town frequently enjoying The Longhorn, O'Charley's, and Jackson's Cafeteria along with frequent visits to Lovely Nails with his wife. He loved road trips and loved nature and God's beauty. He loved reading and was very knowledgeable in many areas. He never missed the chance to tell anyone about his love of God and his relationship with the Lord. His wish was for everyone to meet him in Heaven one day. Left to cherish his memories in addition to Phyllis and Libby are his Brother- in- law-Jeff Worley, Nephew- Quinton Worley, Sister Fran Burgess, Brothers Paul and Fred (Mary) Hilton, Mother-in-law, Betty D. Barnette, Brother- in- laws, Rev. Sam Barnette- wife Jan, Gene Barnette- wife Denise, numerous nieces and nephews, special cousin Christine Hester and his best friend and neighbor, Wayne Maples that he thought the world of. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm on Thursday, October 13th at Greene's Funeral Services-South Chapel 1503 S. York Rd. in Gastonia, NC. The funeral also will be at Greene's Funeral Services at the South Chapel 3 pm Friday, October 14th with the Rev. Sam Barnette and Rev. Bobby Gilley officiating. Burial will follow in Bessemer City, NC at Westview Gardens Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Thunder, 4446 Chapel Grove Road, Gastonia, NC 28054. All donations will go to Webb Street School in Gastonia, NC in his name.
