Ida Christine Staten Barrett

October 16, 1928 — August 1, 2022

Gastonia

Ida Christine Chapman Staten Barrett was born October 16, 1928, to the late Daniel Chapman and Thelma Garris in Vanceboro, North Carolina. She was the oldest of what would eventually be a total of 10 siblings through Papa Daniel and six additional siblings connected to Ida's early childhood experiences.

At the tender age of 17, she found her first love and married John Staten. Her family continued to expand after she met and married Deacon Orlander Barrett on August 1, 1955.  She was a proud mom of seven boys and three girls who she instilled a love for God and encouraged them to serve the Lord.

She moved from Kinston, NC to New York in 1963 and together with her husband, raised her children in Uniondale, New York. Upon retiring, Deacon Barrett and Sister Barrett relocated to Gastonia, North Carolina. She was a licensed evangelist and prayer warrior which came forth from her meeting the late Pastor Annie B Forrester and joining The Church of God of Prophecy in 1954 and continued as a dedicated and loyal member, loving the marches and music of the Bahamas Brass Band. She loved singing in church choirs, including the Concert Choir and the Bronx Senior Choir with her late husband, Deacon Orlander Barrett. Evangelist Barrett served in several ministries that were pastored by her children over the years, as well. It was here where she was known as Sister Barrett and Mother Barrett.

Affectionately known as "Christine" throughout her life, Ida Christine always loved learning and had a passion for being a presence and reciting poems in church and at school. She was only allowed to stay in school up to the 8th grade, however this did not stop her pursuit of education. She persevered to obtain her High School Diploma at the age of 68. She didn't stop there but went on to enroll at North Carolina A&T State University at the age of 75. At 79 years of age, Ms. Christine completed her studies and received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology.

On August 1st, 2022, Mother Barrett departed this life peacefully at Belaire Rehabilitation Center at the age of 93.  She was predeceased by her sons John Staten Jr., and Larry B Staten (Jacqueline). She leaves to cherish her memory eight children Minister Thomas Fredrick Staten (Gail), Evangelist Barbara Ann Vaughan, Deacon Anthony R. Staten (Joyce), Michael O.
