Gastonia, NC Horace Dupree Smith, 89, passed away October 1, 2012, at The Robin Johnson House, Dallas. He was born August 14, 1923 in Spindale, NC, son of the late Horace Lee and Mary Rodgers Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Unity Baptist Church for 52 years. He was owner of Smith Concrete Construction Company. After serving in the US Army in WWII, Horace served as a member of the NC National Guard for 26 years. A funeral service will be held 11 am on Friday at Unity Baptist Church, Gastonia, officiated by Pastor Roger Mathis. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm on Thursday at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia. The interment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby. He is survived by: his wife, Betty Gunter Smith of the home; son, Greg Smith and his wife, Kelly of Gastonia; daughters, Sandra Smith, Judy Jenkins and her husband, Roger all of Gastonia; sisters, Kitty Henderson of Florida, Bobbie Cook of Rutherfordton; grandchildren, Elaine Peeler and husband, Scott, Jeff Jenkins and wife, Cindy, Allison Todd and husband, Monty, Meredith Bise and husband, Mike, Kris Smith; 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: his first wife, Ruth Chandler Smith; brother, James "JC" Smith; sister, Flossie Callahan. Memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, The Robin Johnson House, P. O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 or Unity Baptist Church 482 N. Myrtle School Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052.
