Henry Walter Taylor Jr. (age 79), of Bessemer City, NC, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him.
Born on October 8, 1945, to Henry Taylor Sr. and Bertha Taylor, Henry lived a life defined by unwavering love for his family, deep faith, and a life of service. He was affectionately known as "Jr" by many and lovingly called "Pawpaw" by his granddaughter.
Henry was the heart of his family — a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Vivian Matthews Taylor; his son, Jason Todd Taylor; his granddaughter, Lauren Arnold, lovingly known as "Butterbean," and her husband Aaron Arnold; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Amelia Mae Arnold, lovingly known as "Whisper."
He is also survived by his sister, Louise Barker, and was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Tam and Betty Splawn.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Henry served honorably in Vietnam from October 1969 to October 1970 as a member of the 5/31st Infantry, 197th Infantry Brigade, 3A, 1st Cavalry Division. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars for valor in combat.
He held a lifelong bond with his military brothers, especially David Shields, Troy Kimball, and Larry Cordle, whose friendships were among the greatest honors of his life. Of his service, a fellow soldier wrote:
"Henry was more than just a friend; he was my brother, a fellow soldier in the 1st Cavalry Division. As our point man, he led the way through thick jungles and into the heart of danger, never flinching in the face of fear. His bravery was matched only by his sense of humor, which could lighten the heaviest of moments. He was strong, resilient, and fiercely loyal — a good guy in every sense… The world feels a little dimmer without his light. Rest easy, my friend. Your courage and spirit will never be forgotten."
At home, Henry was a man of steadfast faith and a devoted member of Anthony Grove Baptist Church, where he extended his love, friendship, and service to his church family.
Henry's greatest joys came in the simple things: fishing, tending his vegetable garden, camping, enjoying the beach, and serving his family and friends in every way possible. Though the final years of his life were marked by illness, they never dimmed his strength, humor, or love — each remained unwavering until the very end.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored by all who knew him.
A service celebrating Henry's life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Anthony Grove Baptist Church, Crouse, NC. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, with the service to follow at 3:00 PM.
