The family of Hazel Hayes announces with heavy hearts her passing on June 22, 2024. Born on July 14, 1944, in North Carolina, Hazel was a devoted wife to Tom Hayes; a caring mother to Melissa (Steve), Christine, and Larry (Christina); and a cherished grandmother to Corey, Jakob, Caleb, Kelsey, Makayla, Cooper; and great-grandchildren Alexis, Matthew, Emilia, Braelynn, and Brantley.
In addition to her parents, Howard Koone and Irene (Bill) Bridges, Hazel was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Neal, Nina Hance, and Ernestine Brock; and brother George Koone.
She is also survived by sisters Shirley, JoAnn, and Helen; brother Jerry, and their respective spouses and children, nieces, nephews, and many more relatives whom she loved dearly. Hazel is also survived by her special cousins, Weida, Frances, and Hubert.
Hazel worked for 37 years at Firestone, showcasing her dedication and hard work throughout her career. Her loving nature extended beyond her profession, always finding space at her table for another guest to share her famous gravy.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 29, 2024, beginning at 12:00 noon, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052. A service to celebrate Hazel's life will follow the visitation at 1:00 pm in the chapel. The entombment will take place at Westview Gardens, 1123 Edgewood Road, Bessemer City, NC 28016, following the service.
Hazel's kindness and warmth will always be remembered by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
