Harold Cleveland Smart

Harold Cleveland Smart, 77, of Kings Mountain, passed away December 4, 2015 at his residence. He was born May 10, 1938 in Henrietta, son of the late Bernice Smart and step-father James L. Owens. Harold was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Bessemer City.  He was also a member of the Sons on Confederacy and the NRA. Left to cherish his memories are his children, Donna Mills and husband Benjamin, Ernest Smart and wife Penny, Tracy Smart and wife Wendy, Karen S. Ware and husband Arthur E. Ware, Jr.; grandchildren Carol Gilley and husband Marty, Bobby Whisnant, Jr., Carrie Cleeland and husband Craig, Dylan J. Smart, Jacqueline Ware, Jeffrey Murphy and Ashley Murphy; great-grandchildren Katlyn Sliney, Megan Sliney, Matthew Gilley, Kelli Cleeland, Lilly Cleeland and Sydney Whisnant and the extended family at the City Club of Gastonia. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Julia Owens Smart; daughter Emma Lynn Smart; brother, Bobby Smart; grandmother Bessie McCraw and grandfather John B. McCraw. A funeral service will be held 2 pm Monday at New Life Baptist Church, 614 S. 11th Street, Bessemer City, officiated by Pastor Gene Ware. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 pm Sunday at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont. Memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice – PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054. Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
