George Stewart Aycock, 92, of Gastonia, passed away Nov. 3, 2016, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
Son of the late William and Stella Aycock, he was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Gaston County.
Stewart was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and a history professor at Belmont Abbey College.
Mr. Aycock was also a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Gastonia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelaide Campbell Aycock; his latest wife, Dorothy Stewart Aycock and brother, Rudolf Aycock.
Left to remember Stewart are his stepdaughter, Teresa Sanborn Mendigutia and husband, Felix of Summerville, S.C.; stepson, Curtis Sanborn, of Gastonia; brother, Billy Aycock and wife, Nancy of Charlotte; brother, Jimmy Aycock of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Tracy Robbins of Florida, Rob Sanborn and wife, Lori Beth of Moorehead City; great-grandchildren, Luke, Bennett and Noah and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at Kings Mountain Care Center and Hospice of Cleveland County.
A private memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Shawn Griffin, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 258 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia.
