Gary Chandler Whitworth

Gary "Whit" Chandler Whitworth passed away, May 25, 2022, at home after a long courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his family.

He was born July 18, 1946, son of the late Hugh and Margaret Beheler Whitworth.

Gary leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife, Patricia "Pat" Whitworth; son, Matthew Chandler Whitworth; two grandchildren, Shyla Reece and Kayden Whitworth; two sisters in law, Janice Goff (Jimmy) and Sandy Gunter.

In addition to his parents and grandmother that raised him who he lovingly called "Big Mama". Gary was preceded in death by his precious son, Gary Reece Whitworth; two sisters, Sandra Sneed and Cathy Owens; and three brothers, Ricky Randy and Keith Whitworth.

Gary joined the Army in 1963 at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged in 1969. He had planned to reenlist and had taken test for special forces. He was accepted, except for his age. A special request was sent to his commanding General, requesting a waiver in his case and accepted. As it happens Gary did not reenlist but was very proud of his accomplishments in the Army.

Gary had a love for Harley Davidson motorcycles and has ridden all his adult life. He retired from Duke Energy at age 59 and a half. He has enjoyed his retirement spending much time at the beach with his family and many of his wonderful friends whom he cherished and thought of as family.

Gary had a strong faith in the Lord and trusted in him for a healing. Wednesday morning at 2:30 am, God took him to his heavenly home and did just that.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm, Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service – 1503 S. York Rd, Gastonia, NC 28052, with a service following, led by Pastor Norman Green, his lifelong friend.

Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia, NC, where he will be placed beside his previous son Reece.
