Evelien Betler, 63, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on February 15, 2018 at Testa Family Hospice House. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.
She was born in Holland on October 28, 1954 as the third of four girls to Hermanus "Bob" and Wilhelmina Buitenhuys. When she was a baby her parents brought their family to New Brunswick, Canada where she grew up with her sisters and lifelong friends, Annemarie, Marianne and Linda.
In 1975 she married Daniel Betler and joined him at the World Headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses in New York. After four years they returned to Canada where their two daughters, Melita and Lindsay, were born. In 1985 they moved to Kings Mountain, NC, where they raised their daughters and have been an active part of the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Evelien enjoyed the beauty of Jehovah God's creation immensely, from the beautiful Canadian Saint John River Valley, where she grew up, to the beaches and mountains of the Carolinas. You could usually find her "puttering around out in her yard." She always had a garden and made sure to have water in the bird bath and bird feeders out.
Evelien cherished her relationships with others. She was very close to her family, and throughout her life her mother and sisters were a continuous source of support, comfort and joy. She also treasured her extended family, in-laws, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters around the world.
After some serious health problems in recent years and a painful battle with cancer, she fell asleep in death with full faith in the Bible's promise that Jehovah God will remember her in a future resurrection where she will rejoin her loved ones in a pain-free earthly paradise.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years and "#1 caregiver," Daniel Betler; daughters, Melita Betler, Lindsay Mena (Miguel); mother, Wilhelmina Buitenhuys; three siblings, Annemarie Tremblay (Renald); Marianne Larsen (David), their children Heith, Chuck, Jared, and grandchildren; Linda deVries (Dwight), and her children Rachel and Aaron Zucker; aunt, Johanna van Welsen; uncle, Cornelius deVries (Marie); along with many loved cousins and in-laws.
Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018, 4:30 pm, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2250 Davis Park Rd., Gastonia.
