Ernest Eugene Wilson, 87, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at his residence. Ernest was born in Chester County SC on February 19, 1926. He was the son of the late Sammy Wilson and the late Julia Perry Wilson. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church for 52 years. Ernest was an US Army WWII veteran and retired from the city of Gastonia after serving as a police officer for 31 years. He loved his family, and was known as Poppie to his grandchildren. He loved to sing and play country music with his band known as Ernest Wilson and the Trubadors. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 369, a shriner and a member of the Scottish Rites of Charlotte. A funeral service will be held 3 pm Wednesday at Unity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Mathis and Rev. Eddie Hawkins, officiating. Intement will follow at Gaston Memorial Park with Masonic Rites and Honors by Gastonia Police Department. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm on Tuesday at Greene Funeral Service South Chapel. Ernest is survived by his sons; Larry Wilson, Steve Wilson and wife Connie, daughter, Glenda Wilson Rumney, brother, Bill Wilson, grandchildren; Mark Dockery and wife Chrystal, Tiffany Beaver and husband John, Greg Wilson and wife Christal, Stacy Henderson and husband Jon, Chad Rumney and wife Misty, great grandchildren; Alex Harwell, Ryan Harwell, Kayla Dockery, Hunter Dockery, Gavin Wilson, Natalie Wilson, Brandon Henderson, Nathan Henderson, Katlyn Rumney, Kendall Rumney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Hazel Abernethy Wilson, brothers, Francis and Sam Wilson. The South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium is serving the family
