Edna Rhyne Overcash, 101, of Gastonia, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at Morning Side Assisted Living, Gastonia.
She was born January 6, 1920, in Alexander Co, NC, daughter of the late Oscar A. Rhyne and Florence Miller Rhyne.
Edna was a member of South Marietta Baptist Church, Gastonia, where she was active. She lived life to the fullest. She loved to cook Sunday dinner for everyone and was always feeding people. She lived through the depression on a mill hill in Stony Point, with 2 brothers, and 1 sister. She was the only one to graduate from Stony Point High School. As a child, she had picked cotton to make her own money. She went to work in the mill as a spinner when she got out of school. I don't know how she met my dad, but I do know they eloped, and my dad told grandpa that they were married and through him the marriage license, was how he knew. Grandpa was a scary man. She had 3 children, Atwell, Bobbie, and Steve. We lived at 151 Spencer Ave., Rex # 1, Mill Hill. Mom and dad gave us a wonderful childhood. We were poor but no one could have a better life with both parents. She made us the center of her life. She was kind and loving to all who knew her. Many will miss her for the rest of their life.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Overcash; brothers, Boyce and T.H. Rhyne; and sister, Carmie Hunter.
Edna is survived by her sons, Atwell Overcash, and Steve Overcash; daughter, Barbara Abernathy; grandchildren, Lauren Gunter (Craig), Elizabeth Scruggs, Joe Overcash (Chris Thomas), Jonathan Abernathy (Barbara), David Abernathy (Deana), Chad Abernathy (Risa), Misty Falls (Michael), and Shane Overcash; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Lanny Rhyne; and sister, Pat Fox.
