Dorothy Jean Smith, 71, was born December 31, 1954, in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Herman Leon Smith and Annie Mae Smith. She was called home to be with the Lord on August 17, 2026, when she reunited with her parents, Herman and Annie Mae Smith, and her beloved brothers Roosevelt Shelby and Samuel Smith.
While her roots began in Mississippi, Dorothy's childhood was spent in multiple countries as a result of her father's military career. She never missed an opportunity to share a story about her experiences growing up. As an adult, Dorothy moved to Virginia, where she worked for Comcast for numerous years and the US Government as a contractor until she retired in 2021. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and was in the care of her daughters up until her death.
Despite the memory loss, her faith never wavered. Second to her love for the Lord was her love for family, music, a good word search, and the outdoors. If she wasn't outside venturing through the neighborhood and chatting with newfound friends, she could be seen singing and dancing joyfully throughout the house or curled up with her word search.
She was a devoted member of First Mount Zion Baptist Church for well over 40 years. She enjoyed serving in the Senior Usher's Board, Health Ministry, Women's Ministry, and Single's Ministry.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories her two daughters, Darcel Alexis Bryant (Charles); Dana Alexandra Bryant; her only grandchild, Donovan Avery; brothers Herman L. Smith Jr (Margo); Freddie Smith; Tony Smith (Yvette); Leroy Smith; her sisters Elizabeth Stevenson; Gladys Smith-McCloud (Kenneth) and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 3, 2026, 11:00 AM, at First Mount Zion Baptist Church, 16622 Dumfries Road, Dumfries, Virginia, 22025.
The South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service is honored to serve the Smith family. Condolences may be shared online at: www.greenefuneral.com.
