Don Toney, 90, of Gastonia, passed away January 12, 2024, at his home.
He was born in Rutherford County, NC on April 2, 1933, to the late Nelson and Gussie Harrison Toney.
Don was a member of Carson Memorial Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, NC. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1955.
Don loved his family and his friends. He had a zest for life, and it showed. He spent his spare time in his garage tinkering with his classic car collection. He was most proud of his 1940 Ford Coupe. Although he bought and sold many antiques over the years, the 40 Ford was one he could never let go of.
He was a huge NASCAR fan, loved Bill Elliott, and never missed watching a race.
Don retired from John E. Jenkins as the Vice President in 2009 after working for the company 51 years.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Evans Toney; brothers, Paul Toney, LeRoy Toney, and Nelson Toney, Jr.; and sisters, Madge Jewel Toney, Helen Marlow, Carol Taylor, and Hazel Miller.
Don is survived by his son, Ricky Toney (Lynn); brother, Roger Dale Toney; sister, Faithel Deboise; grandchildren, Danny Thompson (Angela) and Misty Toney Gossett (Todd); great-grandchildren, Josh Brackett (Kate), Jacob Brackett, Kaitlyn Thompson, Drew Thompson, Evan Gossett, Taylor Gossett, and Jase Helms; and great-great-grandchild, Kyson Brackett; and his companion of the last 15 years, Bernice Wright.
The family will receive friends on January 14, 2024, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service, 1503 South York Road, Gastonia, NC. The family will welcome guests at the home of Misty Toney Gossett when not at the funeral home.
A celebration of life service, officiated by Chris Wilson, will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Westview Gardens in Bessemer City, NC.
