It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Debra Ann Barnes, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Debra was born on July 28, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Gastonia, North Carolina, at the age of 14. Raised as a Navy brat, she learned early on the values of resiliency and strength.
Debra became a young mother at the age of 15, and treasured her new journey as a mom. She went back to school and earned her GED at Gaston College and had a career in the assembly of outdoor equipment, proudly contributing her talents to companies like Homelite and Danaher Corporation. Known for her warm smile and infectious laughter, she was the life of the party, first one to dance, and always the loudest in the room. Debra was affectionately known as "Nana" by her grandchildren, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Beyond her family, Debra had a zest for life that was unparalleled. She loved summertime boasting in the sunshine tanning and listening to music in her pool. She enjoyed beach trips, creating beautiful memories that her loved ones will treasure forever.
Debra is survived by her daughters, Crystal Melton (Alan), Amanda Ward (Joseph) and Ashley Hopkins (Daniel); her nine grandchildren Gaige, Cylis, Ethan, Alex, Faith, Brie, Grace, Tori, and AJ were the lights of her life.
She held a special bond with each of her sisters Cindy Bolch and Tina Sulls along with her brothers Mark Cavanaugh, Troy Rowe, Jason Rowe and Donald Sulls Jr. Her love went beyond them every time she stepped into a room as an Aunt to Jamie, Jenny, Johnny, Chantell, Heather, Mark Jr., Dillon, Vanessa, Zach, Korbin, Brooklyn, Carrie, and Katlyn.
Debra was preceded in death by her grandmother, Jean Halstead, her mother Jean Leonard, her aunt Jane Stang, and her granddaughter Ella Lou Ward.
A memorial service officiated by Rev. Thomas Johnson will be held in her honor on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at Greene Funeral Service - West Chapel, located at 216 Archie Whitesides Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052. Following the service, family will receive friends at the funeral home.
