On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, COL(ret) Charles Lewis Pamplin, III, MD died peacefully from complications of dementia at the Wickshire Senior Living facility in Charlotte, NC. Charles was born August 19, 1948 in Hagerstown, Maryland to father Charles Lewis Pamplin, Jr. and Catherine Horst Pamplin.
He graduated from Springbrook High School, Silver Spring Maryland. He then attended Wake Forest University, North Carolina, completing necessary prerequisites for medical school and receiving an acceptance to the University of Maryland Medical School prior to graduation. Matriculating early to medical school, he applied and was accepted to the Health Professions Scholarship Program, a new Military program for bringing medical professionals into the Service. He graduated and entered the Army during the Viet Nam War as a Captain in 1973.
After completing internship and residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Washington, D.C. in Internal Medicine, he embarked on a career in research as one of the first clinical pharmacologists. His research and development efforts included working on malaria vaccines at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Silver Spring, MD; creating medications for preventing illness from chemical weapons attacks at the U.S. Army Medical Material and Development Agency (USAMMDA), Frederick, MD; and synthesizing oxygen carriers to replace blood at the Letterman Army Institute of Research (LAIR), San Francisco, CA. He ended his twenty-one year career at the Letterman Army Medical Center (LAMC) as the Officer in Charge of the Hospital's Base Realignment and Closure efforts at the Presidio of San Francisco.
Following retirement from the Army in 1994, he worked with various pharmaceutical companies, first living in Southlake, Texas and then in Chapel Hill, NC, over the next thirteen years, to deliver valuable medications, like ramipril, a blood pressure lowering medication, to market.
Over his lifetime, he overcame a difficult childhood to produce his greatest legacy his children and grandchildren: Jeremy, married to Erica Fellers, with children Conner, Owen, and Hailey; Courtney, married to Matt Dean, with children Parker and Grayson; and John, married to Brittany Buxton. He will always be remembered for his love of dogs, sushi, coffee, Laphroaig scotch, gadgets and other electronics, stargazing, skiing, running, and listening to classical music and the Eagles "Hotel California."
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Charlotte Weiser, former spouse Harriet Hoffman, sons Jeremy and John, daughter Courtney, grandchildren, and brother William (Bill). He will be interred a Arlington National Cemetery.
