Charles Richard Hodge, 85, of Gastonia, passed away April 26, 2016 at Caromont Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 17, 1930, a native of Gaston County, the son of the late John and Ora Hodge.
Charles was a US Army Veteran and a member of Linden ARP Church in Gastonia. He was the first inductee into the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame for the Fan of the Year on August 30, 2005. He loved all sports and was a member of the US Army Baseball team. In addition to being a player, coach and umpire of many local youth teams, he enjoyed teaching the youth the love of sports the most.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Hodge; son Claye Hodge; daughter-in-law Connie H. Hodge; sister Ruth H. Reese; special niece Beth Watts and her family and special nephew Robby Harwell and his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Charles Rick Hodge; three brothers and 4 sisters.
A funeral service will be held 3 pm Saturday at Linden ARP Church, 205 S. Myrtle School Rd., Gastonia, officiated by the Rev. J. Michael Lineberger.
The family will receive friends 1 – 3 pm prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be in Bowling Green Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be made to Linden ARP Church, 205 S. Myrtle School Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052; Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, 200 S. Park Rd. #100, Hollywood, FL 33021; Crisis Assistance Ministries, 805 W. Airline Avenue #B, Gastonia, NC 28052 or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are with the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
