It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Buchanan Craig, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, who departed from us on December 16, 2024. Born on May 10, 1950, in Mecklenburg County, NC, Charles spent his life in Gastonia, where he became a cherished member of the community.
His love for the community was evident in his roles on the Belmont and New Hope Fire Departments, where he served with honor and commitment, culminating in his position as the President of the Board of Directors for New Hope Fire Department. He was a life long supporter of the Gaston County Police Department, where he worked as a Police Records Specialist.
A true car enthusiast, Charles had a deep love for classic automobiles. He was the proud owner of many cherished cars. In addition to restoring these classics, he initiated the annual "Charlie Craig Cruise In," an event that brought together friends, families, and fellow car enthusiasts to raise money for various charities. His appreciation for automotive history extended to auto racing, and he was also an amateur historian within the community.
Charles was a World War II buff with a particular interest in B-17 Bombers. His curiosity extended to the rich family history of the New Hope Community, which he shared generously with those around him. Charles was also a music lover of classic rock.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Donna Gattis Craig; brother, Hugh Craig (Linda); mother-in-law, Dorothy Gattis; brothers-in-law, Daniel Gattis (Mary) and David Gattis (Vickie); nieces, Tara Gattis, Laura Chesser (Frank), Penny Craig, and Jenny McGinnis; great nephews, Nathaniel Chesser, Donovan Chesser, David Stroupe, and Michael McGinnis, who all stood by his side through life's many adventures.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Grace Craig; father-in-law, Billy Gattis.
A visitation to celebrate Charles' life will be held at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service, 1503 S York Rd., Gastonia, NC, 28052, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Charles' warm presence and charismatic personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In the spirit of his giving nature, we encourage all who knew Charles to continue his legacy of kindness and generosity, embracing life with the same passion and dedication that he demonstrated every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
